Everton’s hopes of signing Devyne Rensch may be high as Ajax are not convinced by the defender.

That’s according to ESPN editor Thijs Zwagerman, relayed by Ajax Fans, who says a contract extension is difficult for the 21-year-old.

A report earlier today stated Everton were in talks to sign Rensch from Ajax this month. Algemeen Dagblad reported that they were one of several clubs chasing the player.

According to them, he had ruled out signing a new deal at Ajax. That has sparked Everton, Marseille and Napoli to all be seriously interested in him. Ajax of course, need to sell or risk losing him on a free in the summer.

They were all interested in a move in the summer, but Roma tabled a €5m bid for this month. That was rejected by Ajax, meaning more would be needed to get him this month.

Ajax director Alex Kroes opened the door to a transfer, admitting that contract negotiations had not worked out as they had hoped.

Zwagerman now provides further details from behind the scenes, with information that undoubtedly gives Everton’s hopes of getting the defender a boost.

“Ajax has offered Rensch a contract in which his fixed salary would decrease,” he said.

“We had known internally for some time that a contract extension would be a difficult matter.

“Ajax said last summer that Hato, Taylor, Brobbey and Ramaj would form the new core of Ajax. Remarkably, Rensch was not mentioned. Ajax was not fully convinced of his potential.

“Although he has played more than 150 matches for Ajax, he has always been caught making a few mistakes.”
