Manchester United are ‘thinking about’ a move for Napoli goalkeeper Alex Meret, with his contract renewal at the Italian club stalling.

That’s according to Sport Mediaset, relayed by Napoli Magazine, who report that there is no agreement between Napoli and Meret at this moment in time.

They say that getting the 27-year-old signed to a new deal is ‘not easy at all’ for the Italian club, who have made their offer to him. He took weeks before agreeing to that deal, but nothing is signed as yet.

That’s because the goalkeeper’s intention is to evaluate any other proposals that come his way, which is where Inter Milan and Manchester United come into the picture.

They have both ‘long been interested’ in the former Udinese player and could pick up on that given his contract is set to expire in June next year. That means he is free to negotiate with clubs under the Bosman ruling from January.

A move to Manchester United would make little sense given he’d be the undoubted number two behind Andre Onana, who is very much the undisputed number one at Old Trafford and now earning plenty of praise for his performances.

Whether Meret would want that is up for debate and Sport Mediaset don’t offer anything on that front, just speculating that Manchester United may be in the picture.
