Tomás Araújo’s rise at Benfica this season has seen him attract interest from several clubs including Newcastle United.
The defender has featured 14 times in all competitions and made his debut for Portugal earlier this month.
Benfica want to reward the Newcastle target with an improved deal, according to O Jogo on Tuesday.
The centre-back’s contract lasts until 2028, and includes an €80m release clause. The Eagles want to extend his deal by another year and with that improve his clause to €100m.
This is to reward the 22-year-old for his impressive performances and also to fend off interested parties like Newcastle.
With regards to the Magpies, the newspaper claims they are considering a move to sign the Portugal international in January.
A Bola are also reporting Benfica are set to extend the player’s contract and raise his clause to €100m. They consider him ‘non-negotiable’ and have ruled out a transfer in the winter market, unless his clause his activated.
Despite their plan to make an approach, the renewal would make it more complicated for Newcastle to secure Araújo’s services in the next window.
