Danny Drinkwater’s career struggled after his period at Leicester City but he’ll remain a Premier League winner forever.
The midfielder retired from the game in 2022 after a stint at Reading in the Championship and also had spells at Burnley, Aston Villa and in Turkey.
Drinkwater has spoken to Corriere dello Sport in Italy today about former Foxes and current AS Roma boss Claudio Ranieri, who will lead his side against Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League later today.
The Englishman reflected on their time together at Leicester and had big praise for the relationship he had with the Italian.
He said, as relayed by Il Romanista: “I had a fantastic relationship with Ranieri during my time at Leicester. With a harmony that went beyond the simple comparison between player and coach, he is a person with whom you can confide, discuss and reflect not only on football topics.”
He further said: “I can simply say that for me he was like a father, a grandfather and a friend, as well as a top-level coach who led us to win a championship.”
Drinkwater also spoke about Ranieri’s decision to join Roma and he backed him for success at the Giallorossi, expressing belief that they will qualify for the Champions League.
“It is really nice to see him back in the colours of the club he loves, I am sure that the players will think the same.
“I hope he can take the club where it deserves to be: in Europe absolutely, but Roma is a club that should always be in the Champions League. He will succeed in this last feat.”
The game against Tottenham later today will be a good indication of how much Roma have to improve under Ranieri.
They are currently in the bottom half of the Serie A table and have won just one game in the Europa League so far.
