Manchester City could ‘fully enter the poker’ for Bayern Munich’s Jamal Musiala as he’d been the signing to add ‘fresh blood’ to a new era for Pep Guardiola.

That’s according to Lothar Matthaus in SportBILD, who believes Manchester City will be major contenders for the German star.

Musiala has continued to be linked with a major move as he continues to shine in the Bundesliga and Europe for Bayern Munich.

Manchester City have been consistently named as suitors for the 21-year-old, with numerous reports in Germany making it clear that Pep Guardiola and his team are big admirers of the player.

His future is currently firmly in focus as Musiala’s current Bayern contract is set to expire in June 2026. That means by next summer he’ll be in the final year of his deal and Bayern will have a decision to make.

If he doesn’t sign an extension the German giants will undoubtedly be forced to sell to avoid losing a star player on the cheap, or worse, on a free the following year.

Matthaus can see Manchester City making their move soon, as Musiala could be the star signing to kick off a new Guardiola era.

“Musiala was trained in England, but he is in great hands at Bayern and is already an ambassador for the club,” he said.

“Nevertheless, I am not sure that his advisors will receive many calls from interested clubs. This is where Pep Guardiola’s extension at Manchester City could still be important.

“He wants to write the next era and needs fresh blood to do so, because Kevin De Bruyne and Ilkay Gundogan, two key players in midfield, are retiring in the long term. That is why I can imagine that he and City will fully enter the poker game for Musiala and Florian Wirtz.

“Pep is already a myth. And what we must not forget: City brought in Josko Gvardiol from Leipzig for €91.5 million. That shows how the ratios are: if City are serious, they can pay insane amounts.”
