Leicester City icon Claudio Ranieri has admitted his success with Cagliari was more important to him than winning the Premier League with the Foxes, even if that was “perfect (and) unrepeatable”.
Tuttomercatoweb cover comments from the Italian manager today from an interview with Corriere della Sera in which he discusses the unforgettable success with Leicester.
Ranieri is an undisputed hero at the Kingpower Stadium despite only spending two years and managing 81 games at the club.
That is because of the unforgettable impact he had on the club, turning them from relegation candidates to 5000/1 Premier League champions in the 2015/16 season.
It’s a story that may never be repeated and has established Ranieri, who is now retired after keeping Cagliari in Serie A last season, as one of the greats of the game.
He remembers the time fondly and the great experiences that came from it, including an unforgettable performance from Andrea Bocelli, but admits Cagliari will always be higher than Leicester for him.
“Look, I’m honest: Cagliari is more important to me than Leicester,” he said.
“I didn’t think I would win. I’m not a dreamer and I know how difficult the Premier League is. My concern in that period was to keep things light-hearted in the dressing room.
“A perfect, unrepeatable year. All the planets aligned. Just think that maestro Bocelli called me because he wanted to come and sing for us. He agreed with the company on a date and by chance it happened immediately after we had won the title. Perfect evening.”
