Tottenham youngster Alfie Devine has admitted he was left starstruck as a youngster at Liverpool by the likes of Luis Suarez and Pepe Reina.
The 20-year-old has been speaking to Het Nieuwsblad, when the topic of his early days at Liverpool was brought up.
He hails from Warrington, a town 19 miles east of Liverpool, and was scooped up by the Reds for their youth set up as a result before being released aged 11.
He joined Wigan Athletic four months later and started to rise from there, making his debut in the Under 23s aged just 15. The Latics signed him on a pro basis in 2020 but their subsequent drop into administration saw him move to Tottenham for around €300,000 just a month later.
This season he’s on loan at KVC Westerlo in Belgium, looking for the regular playing time and development that is hard to find at one of the big sides in the Premier League.
It’s been an interesting journey so far, starting with Liverpool, where he admits he was left starstruck as a child.
“Wow, I was still very small then,” he said when asked to remember his first day with the Reds.
“But I still have some images of it in my head. One day the stars of the first team came to visit the various youth teams. They were each assigned to a certain age group and trained a bit.
“I can still see Pepe Reina and Luis Suarez running like that. And, yes, I was a bit starstruck. Of course, I was also a ballboy when I saw Daniel Sturridge score from very close range, a special experience.”
