Scott McTominay’s big adventure in Napoli has had to take a pause for the international break, although the media around the Italian club have still been following the midfielder closely.
Much of the narrative continues to be confusion over why Manchester United sold him to Napoli in the first place. Paolo Di Canio said a week ago that executives at Old Trafford should be arrested for the transfer crime, and others have simply painted Manchester United as being somewhat dysfunctional.
Federico Macheda has been doing the Italian media rounds, providing commentary on the move, and has perhaps given his longest interview to Radio Kiss Kiss Napoli.
Yes, you may laugh at the name Radio Kiss Kiss Napoli, but they used to be the football club’s official station and are still among the best informed when it comes to what’s going on there.
Anyway, IlNapoliOnline has picked up Macheda’s words and quote him initially speaking about when he first encountered the young McTominay: “At the time he didn’t have this physicality but you could see that he was a very good boy. I’m happy that he’s settling in well in Naples and he’s doing it quickly. When you change leagues it’s not easy and the approach he had shows his desire and ability to accept new challenges. He’s a player who can do everything, good at getting into the goal area and helping out when not in possession. He’s a real worker.
Scott McTominay’s star continues to rise in Naples, and as well as chants, scarves and flags for the midfielder, there’s now also little porcelain statues popping up at tourist shops.
As for Macheda himself, it would appear he feels he left Manchester United too quickly: “My career? Football is a strange game: after my excellent start I had some physical problems that held me back. Then I made some choices hastily. At United I had great champions in front of me and I was wrong to prefer to play for six months on loan around, rather than stay at United.”
