Everton striker Beto has decided to represent Guinea-Bissau rather than Portugal and could feature for them in the next international break.
That’s according to O Jogo, who say the striker has finally decided to play for the African nation and give up on the idea of playing for Portugal.
The newspaper explains that the Everton striker has expressed his desire to play for Guinea-Bissau in the past but always turned down the call as he wanted to see if he could earn a call-up for Portugal instead.
However, after several refusals he’s now changed his mind and agreed to represent them moving forwards.
He will therefore be the ‘big new addition’ to Luis Boa Morte’s squad for the upcoming double clash with Mali, which is crucial to their aspirations of being at next years Africa Cup of Nations.
Whether that is the case remains to be seen, with the Everton man having something of a fractured history with the nation.
O Jogo explain he was called up in March 2021 but missed out due to injury, although a source in the coaching team later insisted that the striker had gone back on his word.
In 2023, when he was at Udinese, he again rejected a call up after being a part of Portugal’s preliminary squad for the 2022 World Cup.
He has now been ‘convinced’ by the leaders of the federation and the coaching team led by Boa Morte, according to them at least, who all believe it is third time lucky and they have a new star striker in their group.
