Aston Villa considered a move for Feyenoord’s Santiago Giménez in the summer window.

That’s according to Mexico’s Periódico AM Noticias, who gives an insight into why Aston Villa decided not to take further steps to sign him.

The striker wanted to leave the Dutch club in the last window, after managing 26 goals and nine assists from 41 games last season.

Aston Villa, AC Milan, Juventus, Bayer Leverkusen, Atlético Madrid and Nottingham Forest had all set their sights on him.

Among these, Milan and the Reds tabled offers. The Serie A side’s bid was turned down by Feyenoord, while the 23-year-old wasn’t in favour of joining Nottingham Forest.

With regards to Unai Emery’s side, they had identified the Mexico international as ‘one of three options’ to replace Jhon Durán.

The 20-year-old Colombian was in demand in the summer, but Aston Villa were successful in retaining him. The Villans’ decision to bet on Durán has clearly paid off as he scored five goals from seven games this season.

Giménez, on the other hand, has four goals and two assists from seven games. He has also picked up an injury and is set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

All things considered, Emery and Aston Villa will still be pleased to have Durán at Villa Park.
