Player has gone from living a dream to ‘ordeal’ at Sunderland – Concern from home country media

Jewison Bennette arrived at Sunderland from Costa Rican side CS Herediano in August 2022, when Alex Neil was in charge at the club.

The Black Cats showed the exit door to Neil a few days later and replaced him with Tony Mowbray. The winger made 20 appearances under Mowbray, who left Sunderland in December 2023.

Since then, the 20-year-old has made one appearance for Sunderland, when he came off the bench in the EFL Cup defeat to Preston North End last month.

The Costa Rican media are concerned about his situation with the Championship side. Fútbol Centroamérica say he was one of the country’s greatest prospects, when he left for Sunderland.

The South American ‘lived a dream’ when he moved to Europe, but this move hasn’t paid off. He failed to enjoy regular minutes at Sunderland, and that resulted in a loan move to Greek side Aris Thessaloniki in January.

Since returning to the club, Régis Le Bris has left him of the squad for league matches this season.

The outlet says Bennette is ‘prolonging his ordeal’ at Sunderland, where the manager has left him out of his plans. There’s a strong belief this doesn’t help Costa Rican football generally and the national team specifically.

Fútbol Centroamérica suggest the player has to find a way to convince Le Bris, to enjoy more minutes at Sunderland in the coming months.
