Tottenham Hotspur’s Pierre-Emile Højbjerg has been on loan at Marseille since the last window. The Ligue 1 side have an obligation to make his stay permanent.
The midfielder wasn’t able to enjoy regular game time under Ange Postecoglou last season and was restricted to eight league starts.
Højbjerg wanted to leave Tottenham and had several options to pick from in the summer window. He only wanted to join Marseille, and this made it easier for them to agree a deal with Spurs.
This is according to Marseille sporting director Medhi Benatia, and he revealed this during an interview with beIN Sports, relayed by Le10 Sport.
Benatia played alongside the 29-year-old at Bayern Munich. The former has given an insight into how the Tottenham man gave him assurance over joining the French club.
This relatively made it easier for Marseille to secure the deal with Tottenham for the Denmark international.
“There were a lot of talks. One thing that went well with Pierre was when he told me: ‘I have England, I have Italy, I have this, I have there, but you find an agreement with Tottenham, I will only go to your place’. Then suddenly I started to be more relaxed. I know he’s a man of his word. He had quite a few choices,” he said.
The Tottenham owned player has been a regular under Roberto De Zerbi at Marseille. He has clocked in 446 minutes from five matches this season.
