Emerson Royal was at Tottenham Hotspur for three years before leaving them for AC Milan in the summer window.

The Brazil international had earlier revealed that former Milan star Cafu is his idol.

Today’s edition of Gazzetta dello Sport has published an interview with Cafu, discussing several topics, including the former Tottenham man.

The 25-year-old has made four appearances for the Serie A side this season. The Rossoneri have endured a difficult start, winning only one game in all competitions so far.

Emerson has also struggled. His performances have been subject to criticism from a section of the Italian media and Rossoneri supporters.

He failed to enjoy regular game time under Ange Postecoglou at Tottenham last season. Earlier this month, journalist Gianni Visnadi suggested Spurs could be rubbing their hands for selling him for €15m plus €5m bonuses.

The South American’s deal at the San Siro lasts until 2028, with an option for another year. His compatriot has come out in his defence and backed him to succeed at Milan, despite the initial struggles.

“He’s very good and, even if he didn’t play much at Tottenham, I am convinced that he will do very well at Milan. He’s young and if he gets going, he can give a lot to the team because he has strength, determination and ‘garra’ [grit in Portuguese],” he said.

The ex-Tottenham man will face a big test when they face derby rivals Inter Milan on Sunday.
