Ian Maatsen’s move to Aston Villa is yet to pay off in terms of the international set up, with Netherlands boss Ronald Koeman planning to leave him out again next month.

That’s according to FC Update, who say the player’s move to Aston Villa ‘has so far turned out wrong’ as it’s not put him in the international picture.

They say that Koeman will not call up Maatsen to his squad for the next international break, when the Netherlands take on Hungary and Germany in the Nations League.

The 22-year-old was a part of the squad for Euro 2024 and was in the pre-selection last month for the Nations League games with Bosnia and Herzegovina and Germany but was ultimately not called up to the squad.

Now the Aston Villa man won’t even be in the provisional squad for the next set of fixtures, with Koeman seemingly focused elsewhere.

That might be as a result of the player not yet establishing himself at Aston Villa following his move in the summer. He’s yet to start under Unai Emery and has only featured as a substitute.

That’s not gone unnoticed by the Netherlands coach who will leave him out of his next selection and may even recommend him for the Dutch Juniors instead. That happened in the last break, but the Aston Villa man was not pleased by it.

Even an injury to Nathan Ake won’t see him get a chance, with Koeman preferring Jurrien Timber and Micky van de Ven in the left-back position at this moment in time.
