Unai Emery was instrumental in helping Aston Villa return to the Champions League for the first time in over four decades.

The manager is supported at Villa Park by two of his compatriots, managing director Monchi and sporting director Damian Vidagany.

Monchi arrived at Aston Villa in July 2023, after spending over four years in his second spell at Sevilla. They won two Europa League trophies during that period.

Financially things didn’t go quite so well, and the club is currently second to last in La Liga and struggling on and off the pitch.

Vamos Mi Sevilla FC now pinpoint two Monchi signings as somewhat problematic.

In his last summer window at Sevilla in 2022, Monchi sold Diego Carlos to Aston Villa and Jules Koundé to Barcelona. He spent €30m to replace the duo with Marcão and Tanguy Nianzou in the same window.

Marcão has made 24 appearances since joining Sevilla, while the Frenchman has clocked in less than 3,000 minutes over the past two seasons. The report says their performances have been ‘lamentable’.

According to the report, there’s confusion over why Monchi spent €30m on Marcão and Nianzou.

Sevillla are in a mess right now and that’s been building for a while. There are some at the club who believe Monchi is partly to blame, but then there’s so many politics flying around the Spanish side that it’s difficult to assess what is valid criticism and what is instead political games.
