UNAM Pumas’ César Huerta has confirmed he was close to joining Liverpool this summer, and even had his bags packed ready to make the move.
The forward has been speaking to journalist while on international duty and was asked about the Liverpool situation by AS.
A report in the summer claimed that Liverpool were keen on the 23-year-old Mexican winger and planned to sign him before then sending him out on loan.
It was later revealed that the plan had been to send him on loan to Sunderland, but that move was vetoed by Black Cats boss Regis Le Bris, which ultimately brought the whole idea crashing down.
There’s been plenty of speculation about why the move might have failed since and Club Universidad Nacional president Luis Raúl González Pérez even came out to explain what had happened and confirm Liverpool’s interest.
Now Huerta has had his say, confirming he was ready to make the move and even had his back packs set for Anfield.
“I already had my suitcase ready, and I dropped it,” he said.
“I know that sooner or later, if I keep doing things right, I’ll get the opportunity. It’s a train that only happens once and I’m focused on Pumas.
“I come to the national team, and I try to do my best to help my team. I know the rest will come soon.”
There’s already been insinuations in Mexico that Liverpool could return in January, so this is certainly a situation to keep an eye on.
