If Wout Weghorst thought his move from Burnley to Ajax this summer would be welcomed by all, it appears he was sorely mistaken.
That’s at least if the latest rant from Ralf Seuntjes is anything to go by, with Soccer News covering his comments today.
Weghorst finally completed a move to Ajax at the end of August, making a return to the Netherlands in a €2.38m deal.
He had returned to Burnley from a loan spell at Hoffenheim but both parties had made it clear they didn’t want to continue together, and he spent most of the summer transfer window being linked with a move away.
Ajax had been credited with an interest throughout the summer despite already having a packed forward line with Brian Brobbey, Chuba Akpom and Julian Rijkhoff.
He’s questioned the logic of the transfer again today and believes if Ajax wanted another striker, they might have actually been better off spending their money elsewhere.
“It’s not good,” he said.
“I say very honestly: if you arrive at Ajax with Wout Weghorst, you have come a long way. There’s no way this is possible, man. This policy makes no sense at all. You have Brobbey and Akpom. Brobbey simply has to be the first striker at Ajax.
“If you get such a player for half an hour, they would have been better off buying Sam Lammers. He is cheaper and I think that is more of an Ajax striker than Weghorst. In terms of everything, he is more of an Ajax striker than Weghorst.
“Nothing against Weghorst, but this is not possible. Being Ajax, this is really not possible. If I were on the supervisory board, I would have blocked this.”
