Celta Vigo sporting director Marcos Garcés has admitted they were forced to sell striker Jørgen Strand Larsen to Wolverhampton Wanderers for accounting reasons.
The Celta Vigo director has been speaking to Faro de Vigo today, assessing the club’s summer business and where it leaves them this season.
It was a busy summer for the Spanish side, with no fewer than 13 players leaving the club and only four arriving, alongside youngsters being promoted to the first-team squad.
The most high-profile departure was Strand Larsen, who has joined Wolves on a season long loan deal that is likely to be made permanent next summer.
His departure was a major one for the Spanish side, given he had managed 18 goals and nine assists in 74 games for the club in total since joining from FC Groningen in September 2022.
Ordinarily such a departure would usually command a big fee, but instead Celta allowed the striker to depart on an initial €3m loan, with Wolves having an option to buy for next summer thrown in.
Garcés considers that a good deal, but admits they were forced into it by a need to balance the accounts.
“I am happy with the process,” he said on the club’s summer business.
“There was not much room for manoeuvre, but we worked as a team and managed to get the right players out and sign them within the cost of the squad, without mortgaging the club. We have not put the future of the institution at stake.
“The value that may have been lost in sales can be found in the youth squad and in young players like Douvikas, Swedberg…”.
“(Larsen was) for accounting reasons. I think the price (€27m plus €3m is fair, although it is always difficult to evaluate a player.”
