On August 29th, TUDN reported Liverpool came very close to signing Club Universidad Nacional’s César ‘Chino’ Huerta.
Later that day, journalist Rodrigo Celorio stated the Reds were set to sign the 23-year-old and send him out on loan to Sunderland. However, Régis Le Bris wasn’t in favour of his arrival at the Stadium of Light.
Liverpool failed to sign the winger, who is still at the Mexican club. A fresh report from TUDN points out his move to Liverpool didn’t take shape because Sunderland didn’t sign him on loan.
They have also relayed comments from the Mexican club’s manager, Gustavo Lema. He’s pleased that Liverpool showed interest in Huerta.
As well as the manager, Club Universidad Nacional president Luis Raúl González Pérez has confirmed Liverpool made an approach to sign the attacker. His comments are relayed by Record in Mexico.
The president has insisted neither his side or the Mexico international were responsible for Liverpool’s failure to sign the attacker.
“It had nothing to do with the club or his intention, on the contrary, they recognised the qualities of Huerta,” Luis Raúl González Pérez explained.
“External circumstances of the teams themselves that envisioned it could not materialise. I repeat, not because of the quality of Huerta, but because of external circumstances.”
Huerta has scored two goals from five matches for Club Universidad Nacional (often known as Pumas UNAM) this season. Previous reports made it clear that Liverpool were so impressed with UNAM’s approach to negotiations they’ll continue to work and a transfer in a near window is a distinct possibility.
