On Sunday, the Swedish football federation [SvFF] announced that Newcastle United’s Emil Krafth has been withdrawn from the national team squad.
The Blue and Yellow will face Azerbaijan and Estonia in the UEFA Nations League in the next few days.
Sweden manager Jon Dahl Tomasson had included the Newcastle player in the squad, but he’s forced to miss the two games due to a fitness concern. This has been confirmed by SvFF on their official website, relayed by Fotbollskanalen.
The Dane has already called up Ludogorets Razgrad’s Edvin Kurtulus to replace the right-back in the squad.
“On Monday, the men’s national team will gather in Stockholm for the upcoming Nations League matches,” a statement read.
“On Sunday evening, however, the national team management can announce a cancellation in the squad. Emil Krafth won’t join as planned due to a minor injury. After the announcement, national team coach Jon Dahl Tomasson called in Edvin Kurtulus as a replacement.”
The 30-year-old played the full 90 minutes in the Magpies’ 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday. There’s no mention of the details of the injury or the time needed for the Sweden international to recover from this setback.
Krafth came off the bench in the Magpies’ win over Southampton, after Fabian Schär was sent off. Eddie Howe has started the Swede as a centre-back in the last three games.
Newcastle will take on Wolverhampton Wanderers on September 15th. Krafth could be hoping to be fit for this tie, considering he’s suffered only a ‘minor injury’.
