Everton may have been handed their chance to sign defender Lorenz Assignon as their main rivals, Marseille, have been turned away by Rennes.
That’s according to Foot Mercato, who say Marseille have been turned away after trying to sign Assignon on loan.
A report yesterday stated that Everton and Marseille were talking to Rennes about Assignon and a potential deal on deadline day. Both clubs were believed to be looking at a loan deal.
Talks were initiated over a loan with an option to buy but according to FM’s information, that has been turned down by Rennes. That’s because the Breton club are not willing to loan the player to Marseille.
That could given Everton their chance to sweep in and get their man. The right-back position still remains a problem for them and Assignon could be the answer.
The big problem would be that they can’t do a loan deal as Orel Mangala is set to take their second international loan spot after Jesper Lindstrom.
It would need to be a permanent transfer, although perhaps one in which Everton pay next year. They’ve done similar deals before for the likes of Beto.
It remains to be seen but he’s a name to keep an eye on, particularly now Marseille won’t be proving any competition.
