Back in April, we covered claims from Portugal which stated Liverpool followed FC Porto’s Alan Varela last season.
Two months later, AS explained the Reds have initiated contact to sign the midfielder this summer.
Fast forward to the end of August and TyC Sports claim Liverpool have ‘made an attempt’ to secure his services this summer.
The Dragons signed the 23-year-old from Boca Juniors in August 2023 and offered him a deal until 2028. He made 44 appearances in all competitions last season and has already made four starts this season.
Varela quickly adapted at the Portuguese club, and this didn’t go unnoticed. Liverpool had a scout follow him since February and have ‘great interest’ in the Argentine.
Arne Slot’s side have made an attempt to sign Varela. It’s claimed Liverpool have held talks with Porto, but they have ‘declared him non-transferable’. In fact, they are thinking about offering the player an extension.
TyC Sports say Porto will only let the South American leave if his €90m release clause is activated. Despite Liverpool’s ‘great interest’, they are unlikely to invest this amount on the midfielder on deadline day.
Varela had a chat with ESPN, who specifically asked him about the possibility of making a switch to England.
“You always want to improve, you want to make the jump to a league as important as the Premier League. I’m calm, I try to work in the best way and the moment will come whenever it is,” he said.
