Huddersfield Town fans would likely prefer if there was absolutely no question mark over the future of David Wagner. But that there is, and that the manager won’t rule an exit out, could work in the club’s favour.
For much of the last season Wagner was linked with a move to the Bundesliga, with Wolfsburg the most interested, and Bayer Leverkusen linked more recently. Getting Huddersfield promoted to the Premier League should have ended all the speculation, some may believe, but that’s not the case.
Asked if he was surprised by the question, Wagner told the German newspaper: “No. I also read the German newspapers. That is why I know that my name has already been mentioned in that context.
“I am going to sit down with my owner in the next few days because we have a completely different situation as a result of the promotion. Then we have to look 
at how he thinks about it. After that, I’ll decide how it goes from here.”
Wagner sounds very much like he wants to know Huddersfield’s Premier League plans, and would like assurances about spending. The manager’s stock is right now at the highest it ever has been, but a season in the bottom three would change that completely.
Telling everyone who asks that he’s completely committed to Huddersfield Town, and isn’t in the slightest bit interested in Bayer Leverkusen or anywhere else, isn’t the strongest negotiating tactic.
