It seems like a matter of time before Brighton’s Billy Gilmour joins Napoli.
The talks have gone on for weeks now and even though the move is yet to conclude, Napoli have made some progress and they should be able to sign the Scotsman soon.
The Italian press has always been confident about the move, with Gilmour having not played in pre-season friendlies for Brighton.
That sentiment continues to grow and there is quite a bit of praise for the midfielder in the Italian media.
Former Rangers striker Marco Negri spoke to Radio Sportiva about Gilmour, who previously plied his trade with the Gers’ youth side.
Negri hailed Gilmour as someone who is like Jorginho, but the Seagulls man would not start every game.
He said, as relayed by TuttoNapoli: “He is a pure midfielder, a playmaker, he plays in front of the defence, he comes out when you want to start from the back, he always makes himself seen, very good technically.
Whether Gilmour can go on to replicate Jorginho’s glittering career remains to be seen but Negri also stated that the Brighton player may not start in the absence of Stanislav Lobotka.
“Either him or Lobotka, yes, but at this level alternatives are always needed. The pace is very high, with so many substitutions and so many games, so you always need someone like that.”
Lobotka has been a standout in midfield for Napoli in recent season. Antonio Conte has a history of making the most out of deep midfielders and Gilmour could well be the next player who benefits.
