“I want to delude myself” – Journalist very keen for Manchester United player to be signed

Marco Brescianini’s move to Napoli is one of a growing number of transfers around European football to have collapsed over the past few days.

This time it was apparently related to the terms of the move form Frosinone but there’s a reasonable chance that other reasons will come out in the future.

Napoli remain on the hunt for multiple midfielders, and that’s seen them linked with an unlikely move for Manchester United’s Scott McTominay.

The unlikely aspect of it all comes from Manchester United almost certainly asking for far more than Antonio Conte’s side would be willing to pay.

That is not to say the desire for the Scottish midfielder doesn’t exist, at least around the Italian club.

Journalist Gaetano Imparato is quoted by CalcioNapoli24 as saying, initially about the Brescianini failure: “A bad impression that could have been avoided, although to be honest I have to say that I thought he was a normal level player. The fact that he was indicated by Conte had convinced me to a certain point. Certain things must be avoided, I want to hope that there is another name, there has been a lot of talk about McTominay in this last period and he is on the market. I want to delude myself that this is the move behind the Brescianini situation, but we are losing the possibility of putting together a team ready immediately to start off at our best.”

That comment about delusion may well be spot on, with claims in Italy this morning saying Napoli would like to take the Manchester United player on loan, which would require him extending his contract at Old Trafford.
