Leeds United’s squad should right now be looking forward to a play-off final and keeping dreams alive of Premier League football next season. That’s how things were meant to all work out, but it’s not turned out that way.

A collapse towards the end of the season, combined with good runs from others including Fulham, saw Garry Monk’s men drop out of the play-off places. There’s one good side to that for the Leeds squad… the holidays start early.

That’s seen Pontus Jansson going back to his former club Malmo, to keep fit ahead of Sweden internationals, and others going off to sunnier climates.

Gaetano Berardi has also gone back to his former club, report Bresciaoggi, spending some time at Brescia this week, wishing them well in their fight against relegation from Serie B. That fight has gone well, they’re now safe, but such is Berardi’s fondness for his old club, he went to their training ground to urge them on.

With a Leeds United contract running out in June 2018, the club need to make a decision over the 28 year old. It’s now the time when a renewal would be offered, to prevent the danger of losing Berardi on a free transfer next summer.

Should Massimo Cellino complete a takeover of Brescia, as has been so strongly rumoured for a while now, then he may feel Berardi would be a good addition. Coming through the club’s youth system, and still attached emotionally, it would be tempting.

That’s of course if Leeds delay renewal talks.
