Real Sociedad’s Mikel Merino has been waiting for Arsenal since May, according to Mundo Deportivo.
The midfielder’s deal lasts until 2025, and his desire is to join the Gunner this summer.
Back in May, Arsenal contacted the La Liga side to convey their interest in the 28-year-old and their intention to make an offer.
La Real want €30m for Merino, and Mikel Arteta’s side are aware of this. At this moment in time, the Spanish club haven’t received a bid, but they are aware of Arsenal holding talks with the player.
El Diario Vasco also state that the north London club have had discussions with the Spain international’s camp.
It’s claimed Arsenal have agreed personal terms with the Euro 2024 winner, for a higher salary than his current wages. The sporting aspect is more important than the economic one, which is why he hasn’t accepted Real Sociedad’s important renewal offer.
The Premier League side can offer the player a better deal, both sporting and economic wise, and this has convinced him to reject other clubs.
Arteta, for his part, is keen to have his compatriot, and has personally given his approval for this operation. Despite this, Arsenal haven’t yet sent an offer to Real Sociedad.
It’s claimed the ‘ball is now in Arsenal’s court’, who can unblock the situation by tabling a bid. If the Spanish club fail to agree a deal with the Gunners, Merino could either stay with them or look for another team in this window.
This is unlikely to happen as El Diario Vasco believe Arsenal will take the necessary steps to sign him in the ‘coming days’.
