São Paulo defender Welington wants to join Southampton this summer rather than next year and is urging the two clubs to find an agreement and make that happen.

That’s according to Goal Brasil, who report that the left-back wants to move in the summer window rather than waiting until January.

Welington already has an agreement in place with Southampton to move next year on a free transfer after signing a pre-contract agreement with them earlier this month.

He now wants to leave immediately rather than next year, having turned down three contract proposals from São Paulo to sign the agreement with Southampton instead.

He’s asked the club’s board to sanction an earlier departure but is yet to receive a response from them on the matter.

At this moment in time all indications are that São Paulo’s management won’t grant him his wish as he’s a first-team player and key to their plans, at least for the rest of this year, under manager Luis Zubeldía.

It is up to Southampton to change their minds and they’ve already seen a low-ball offer rejected by their Brazilian counterparts.

With Welington pushing and seemingly completely focused on Southampton, though, perhaps São Paulo can be convinced to change their minds.
