Arsenal are in the picture to sign Sergi Roberto this summer, according to Friday’s edition of Sport.
The 32-year-old has technically been without a club since his deal at Barcelona expired on June 30th, and Arsenal or anyone else can sign him for free.
Roberto can operate as a midfielder or fullback, and Barca director Deco believes his versatility can be a ‘wild card’. This is also appreciated by their manager, Hansi Flick.
Barca want to offer a one-year extension, and he’s also open to signing a new deal at the Camp Nou. In fact, the two parties already found an agreement weeks ago, but the renewal hasn’t been made official just yet.
The La Liga side have asked the player for some time, in order to sort out their finances. They were hoping to raise funds through selling some of their players for high prices, but that hasn’t happened so far.
Barca will soon go on pre-season tour to the United States, and could be without their captain for the trip. Roberto, for his part, has been training alone with a personal trainer.
The Catalan club’s delay can allow Arsenal or another club to secure his services for free. Sport state the versatile player’s patience will have a limit, considering he has started to receive offers, without specifying the details of these clubs.
Roberto is ‘personally attracted to the Premier League’, where the Gunners are the only club mentioned. It’s claimed Arsenal have already asked about him and there are other English clubs who would be delighted to secure his services.
The Spaniard could break the agreement with Barcelona, if they continue to delay, to join Arsenal or another club.
