On June 4th, Marca stated Atlético Madrid have initiated contact over signing Manchester City’s Julián Álvarez.
Two days later, the same outlet stated the Citizens have no plans to sell the striker and his exit is unlikely to take shape this summer.
Later that month, the 24-year-old insisted that he’s happy at Manchester City despite reports linking him with a move away from the Etihad.
Los Rojiblancos haven’t given up on the Argentina international, according to journalist César Luis Merlo. He took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to claim the La Liga side are advancing in their pursuit of the Copa América winners.
Merlo makes it clear that this is his original information, and adds that the Madrid club are ‘already negotiating’ with the Manchester City star.
He further adds Álvarez is ‘willing to leave’ Pep Guardiola’s side for a club where he can have more prominence.
Guardiola has favoured Erling Haaland ahead of the South American to lead Manchester City’s attack and this would be the reason Álvarez wants to leave.
Merlo makes no mention of Manchester City’s stance, who now have to make a decision. They are in a comfortable position, considering his deal lasts until 2028.
