Liverpool’s Sepp van den Berg has been out on loan since the start of the 2021/22 season.
The 22-year-old spent the recently concluded season on loan at 1. FSV Mainz 05, making 36 appearances in all competitions.
On June 7th, Sky Deutschland journalist Florian Plettenberg said Mainz have started talks with Liverpool to buy Van den Berg in the summer window.
Earlier this month, the player told De Telegraaf that he doesn’t want to return to Anfield. This is relayed by Bild, who back up the Bundesliga side’s wish to secure the centre-back’s services on a permanent transfer.
Liverpool have appointed Arne Slot as Jürgen Klopp’s successor at Anfield. The Reds have also made changes behind the scenes as Richard Hughes has taken charge as the club’s new sporting director. Van den Berg doesn’t seem to be on top of his priority list.
“The new sporting boss Richard Hughes has more important issues than a player who was on loan to Germany – I’m not even sure if he even knows Sepp van den Berg,” a source told Bild.
Sepp van den Berg’s comments to De Telegraph seemed over the top and somewhat ill advised, and the same can be said for Sarcasm sent from the Bundesliga club.
