Mikel Arteta has his say on VAR after Wolves motion – Arsenal boss admits talks needed

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has insisted it is clear that the Premier League clubs need to talk over VAR moving forwards.

The Spaniard has been speaking to AS after being awarded the Officer’s Cross of the Royal Order of Isabella the Catholic, a civil honour awarded to Spanish citizens or organisations for promotion of the country.

The Arsenal boss held talks with the press after that event, in which he naturally faced questions about life in the Premier League at this moment in time.

While the focus was very much on the title challenge with Manchester City going down to the final day of the season, as is always the case, VAR was a part of the conversation.

Earlier on Wednesday it was revealed that Premier League clubs would be voting on the continued use of the system after Wolves had put a motion forward to trigger the vote following another season of VAR controversy.

Gary O’Neil’s side have felt aggrieved in particular, with several big instances going against them across this campaign.

It is that which has led to their move to have VAR removed entirely and it seems while Arteta isn’t backing that entirely, the Arsenal manager does believe a conversation is needed.

“It is clear that we have to talk,” he said.

“There’s still not a lot of clarity, so when this is all over, we’ll sit down and talk about the rules again. From there, let’s see how much they listen to us, I still don’t have it very clear.”
