Manchester United star Alejandro Garnacho is waiting to hear from Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni before deciding what happens to him this summer.

That’s according to journalist Marcos Duran, who reports that the Manchester United man is yet to decide whether he’ll make himself available for Argentina’s U23s and the senior side.

Duran reports that Garnacho wants to go to the Copa America with Argentina, but has doubts about the Olympic Games, which he could also be a part of.

He wants to help Argentina as much as he can but needs to be realistic after a season in which he has been the Manchester United player with the third most minutes overall.

He’s already featured for Argentina’s U-20 side and the senior side but has never played for Javier Mascherano’s U23’s, who are set to compete in the Olympics in Paris this summer.

On the face of it, the Manchester United man is not particularly interested in that tournament as he considers himself a part of the senior side and is prioritising playing in the Copa America with them.

The problem is that Scaloni and his team don’t necessarily have him in their plans yet and believe that he instead needs to wait for his chance and instead go with the U23s. While they believe in his talent, there are more established stars ahead of him right now.

There is the possibility he plays in the Copa America and the Olympics, particularly if the former increase their squad sizes to 26, but Manchester United could then intervene.

They’d be wary of a repeat of what happened with Barcelona’s Pedri, who played in Euro 2020 then the Tokyo Games and suffered burnout and a big injury not long afterwards.

It really depends on Scaloni and Manchester United, who may have different plans to Garnacho’s, which are focused on the Copa America for now.
