Earlier this year Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez revealed that he aims to feature in the Paris Olympics with Argentina this summer.
The 31-year-old has already won the World Cup and the Copa América, and he’s now set his sights on clinching Olympic gold for his country.
According to DSports Radio journalist Fernando Czyz, the stopper has a deal in place with Aston Villa that can allow him to represent the Argentina U23 side.
Earlier this week Unai Emery’s side secured a place in Europe’s elite club competition after Manchester City defeated Tottenham Hotspur.
The former Arsenal goalkeeper will certainly be part of Lionel Scaloni’s squad for the Copa América and if selected for the Olympic squad he would miss pre-season with Aston Villa.
The Copa América will take place between June 10th and July 14th and the Olympics is set to kick start on July 26th. Therefore, Czyz claims there would be discussions between Aston Villa and Martínez despite the agreement.
This agreement would be meaningless if Argentina U23 coach Javier Mascherano leaves Martínez out of his squad so this also needs to be taken into consideration.
