Naby Keïta spent five years at Liverpool before leaving them as a free agent at the end of last season. The midfielder joined Werder Bremen last summer and this decision hasn’t paid off for him.
The Guinea international struggled with multiple injuries at Liverpool and that has continued at the German club this season as he’s been restricted to 107 minutes of action from five games.
Keïta’s situation at Werder Bremen has gone from bad to worse as Sky Deutschland state he was involved in a big ‘scandal’ at the weekend.
The Bundesliga side suffered a 5-0 defeat to Bayer Leverkusen on Sunday and the result saw the latter clinch the title. Prior to the clash, Werder Bremen manager Ole Werner had informed the former Liverpool man that he wouldn’t be starting against Xabi Alonso’s side.
This apparently didn’t please the 29-year-old and Werder Bremer director Clemens Fritz claims he refused to be part of the match-day squad.
Werner was also unhappy with the midfielder’s behaviour and made his feelings clear during a chat with DAZN after yesterday’s tie.
“It annoys me and it will have consequences. I haven’t spoken to him yet, but that will follow in the next few days,” Sky quoted Werner as saying.
Meanwhile, Keïta took to Instagram to “clarify” his situation after the weekend’s ‘scandal’.
“Since the first day I signed with this great club, I have always worked selflessly and professionally. My only wish has always been to help the club and bring joy to the many fans, especially at a time in which the results are not as we would like,” he said.
“Since the beginning of my career, I have never had problems with discipline wherever I have been and have always tried to be a role model. I will therefore not accept that anyone tarnishes this image. To the fans: I want you to know that I fight every practice so I can make you happy every weekend. Training, giving everything, these are the limits of my power. Allez, Werder! Naby Keita.”
