Maximilian Wöber moved to Borussia Monchengladbach from Leeds United in the last summer window, as the Whites saw multiple players leave on loan following relegation to the Championship.
Since then, the 26-year-old has played 26 matches for Gladbach, and German newspaper Bild say he’s made himself ‘extremely important’ to the Bundesliga side.
With the end of the loan now approaching, there are decisions to be made regarding a potential stay. Should no agreement be found then Wöber will obviously be heading back to Leeds United.
Speaking to Bild about the uncertainty surrounding his future, the defender said: “I haven’t heard from Gladbach in a while, they will also be squad planning for next season. I’m curious whether anyone from Gladbach will come to me – or from Leeds too. Nobody has talked to me yet.”
Gladbach sporting director Roland Virkus responded to that by saying: “We were in talks with Max, but there hasn’t been an exchange recently – because Leeds aren’t moving. The problem is that if we don’t reach an agreement with Leeds then it will be difficult to move on. At the moment it’s just that the numbers are quite high.”
Wöber will be at the Euros this summer with Austria, which will be a showcase should Leeds United need to find another buyer. As for Gladbach, it would seem odd not to make a big effort for a player who has been so key for them this season.
Their hope will obviously be that the Whites aren’t promoted and therefore don’t have as much strength in negotiations.
