On Thursday evening, Liverpool suffered a 3-0 defeat to Atalanta in their Europa League quarter-final at Anfield. It was the Reds’ first home defeat since Real Madrid registered a 5-2 win back in February 2023.
The Merseyside club dominated the possession but weren’t able to break the Serie A side’s defence yesterday.
Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport have provided match ratings and Liverpool’s Kōstas Tsimikas was given the lowest, 4.5/10, among all the players.
They say the Greece international was a ‘disaster’ on the left side of Liverpool’s defence, allowing Atalanta to create several attacking opportunities from that side. The 27-year-old was replaced by Andrew Robertson after the first half.
Gazzetta have also rated Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp and he got 4/10, which is even lower than Tsimikas.
They claim the manager is to be blamed for the Reds’ ‘disaster’ and suggest the defeat was a result of Klopp underestimating Atalanta.
Both Cody Gakpo and Harvey Elliott got 6/10, the highest for Liverpool players.
The return leg will take place in Italy next Thursday.
