On February 27th, Günebakış stated Celtic are keen on signing Uğurcan Çakır in the next window. It was also reported Brendan Rodgers’ side had asked about the fee needed to bring the Trabzonspor goalkeeper to Celtic Park.
Fast forward to April and Celtic’s efforts to secure the 28-year-old’s services are detailed by Akşam.
It’s said Celtic have ‘stepped in’ to sign the stopper and have requested Trabzonspor’s permission to negotiate a deal.
In addition to this, Celtic have requested permission, likely from the Süper Lig side, for Rodgers to have a video conference call with the Turkey international. There’s no mention of whether Trabzonspor have granted Celtic that permission.
If Celtic are able to convince the goalkeeper’s camp, the report says they are ‘ready to pay’ £7.5m to buy him in the summer.
Trabzonspor president Ertuğrul Doğan doesn’t want to sell the player to another Turkish club and seems to be positive about interest from elsewhere.
Çakır’s deal lasts until 2027 and the Trabzonspor management want to make a decision on his future. If there’s a sale, their expectation is to earn at least €15m [£12.8m], which is over £5m higher than what Celtic are ready to offer.
