Werder Bremen head of professional football Clemens Fritz has told Deich Stube that Birmingham City’s Oliver Burke is sidelined with an injury.
The German club allowed the forward to join the Blues on loan in the summer and he’s failed to score a goal or register an assist from 20 games this season.
Birmingham City have already sacked three managers, John Eustace, Wayne Rooney and Tony Mowbray, this season, and Gary Rowett was appointed as an interim manager earlier this month.
The Scot was a regular under Eustace and Rooney, before losing his place under Mowbray. He hasn’t featured for the Championship side since their FA Cup defeat to Leicester City in January.
On the player’s current situation, he said: “He currently has a muscular injury and has therefore not been able to play for a few weeks. He’ll probably need some time before he’s fit again.”
Having joined Werder Bremen in the summer of 2022, the attacker was sent out on loan to Millwall in January, before letting him join Birmingham City on another temporary spell.
Burke’s deal at the German side lasts until 2025, but a decision on his future has to be made in the summer.
“We are in contact with him and his advisor and will decide together how to proceed in the summer,” Fritz explained.
There’s even suggestions of a contract termination to facilitate a free transfer, despite Burke’s Werder contract running until June 2025.
