On February 26th, Sweden appointed Jon Dahl Tomasson as their new manager, weeks after his exit from Blackburn Rovers.
The 47-year-old was presented to the media today, and one of the topics he discussed was the decision to leave Blackburn Rovers and to take up the national team job.
When discussing the former, Jon Dahl Tomasson revealed he’d become frustrated at Blackburn Rovers and explained why.
“It was a difficult situation at Blackburn. They were cutting the budget. I signed for a project that was no longer there,” he said, as quoted by Fotbollskanalen.
On the Sweden job, he added: “I’ve really been looking forward to this moment. I’m very proud to stand here as the new national coach of Sweden. It’s a nation with a lot of football tradition.”
Jon Dahl Tomasson left the club earlier this month but talks with Sweden first took place towards the end of December, a month after Janne Andersson stepped down from his post.
He revealed this when asked to share what he felt when he first got a call from Sweden, and his comments are relayed by Aftonbladet.
“We’ve been talking since before Christmas. The situation at Blackburn was a bit different then. But I got the perfect feeling right away that I wanted to be part of that journey. The conversations we had were extremely positive and I got a ‘wow’ feeling that I really want to be involved,” Jon Dahl Tomasson explained.
The Dane’s first game in charge of Sweden will be a friendly against Portugal later this month.
