Player ‘turned down’ Bournemouth offer on deadline day – Andoni Iraola was keen

Villarreal’s Santi Comesaña rejected an opportunity to join AFC Bournemouth, according to AS.

The midfielder spent six years at Rayo Vallecano before leaving them as a free agent at the end of last season.

During his time there, the 27-year-old played three seasons under current Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola.

Iraola arrived at the Vitaly Stadium at the start of the season and was keen on bringing his former player to the Premier League.

Comesaña had struggled for regular game time between September and the end of December. The report says he could have changed his situation by making a switch to Bournemouth.

On the last day of the window there was an offer from the Cherries.

The player had to make a decision, after the club informed him that it was up to him to decide whether to accept a move to Bournemouth. He ‘turned down’ the English club and decided to stay.

AS claim Comesaña’s decision paid off, and he scored a brace against Real Sociedad last Friday. He’s also started to enjoy regular minutes in recent weeks, indicating that he was right to continue at Villarreal.
