Last summer, Newcastle United signed Yankuba Minteh from Danish side Odense Boldklub and immediately sent him out on loan to Feyenoord.
The winger has scored six goals and registered three assists from 25 games this season, but has been the subject of criticism from a section of the Dutch media and pundits.
Feyenoord manager Arne Slot has come out in defence of the Newcastle owned player. That hasn’t stopped the criticism as earlier this month, journalist Dennis van Eersel stated the 19-year-old isn’t good enough for the Eredivisie side.
Speaking to De Telegraaf, Minteh says he isn’t aware of the criticism aimed towards him.
“I don’t read anything or I don’t understand it,” he said.
At the weekend, the Gambia international scored a brace in Feyenoord’s away win over Almere City. According to Transfermarkt, there were 4,223 fans in the stadium.
Since the start of this year, the Newcastle man has been to AFCON, played against AS Roma at the Stadio Olimpico and now in the smallest stadium in the Eredivisie.
When asked if he can handle varying conditions, Minteh explained: “I used to play football on much poorer pitches in Africa. And at AFCON the pitches were also different than in our own De Kuip or in Rome.
“I had already heard that this was one of the worst pitches. I’m used to it. I had never been to this stadium in Almere. But I don’t care. In my country everyone is used to bad pitches.”
The report states Newcastle are ‘quite satisfied’ with his development at Feyenoord and the two parties are in regular contact. However, the attacker has a different take on his own performances so far this season.
“I don’t have real satisfaction yet. I have more to offer than I have shown to people so far. It’s about more than my pace, which is focused on. Today [against Almere City] is a good example, I want to show that even more,” he added.
