With inter club relationships all the rage, it seems Girona are taking theirs with Manchester City to the next level.
El Diario Vasco cover the Spanish side today and their announcement yesterday that they plan to showcase Manchester City’s treble trophies from last season.
The newspaper reports that the Spanish side, who are part of the City Football Group network of clubs, are planning to display City’s trophies in the club store on Saturday and on Monday in the fan zone prior to the match against Rayo Vallecano.
This is ‘not something common’ according to the newspaper, who are wondering why a club would want to showcase another side’s successes, even if they are linked by the same owners.
They’re presenting it as an opportunity for the fans, but Diario believe it is really an attempt to ‘strengthen the ties of cooperation’ between the Catalan and English clubs.
They already share players, with Savio set to move to Manchester City in the summer, as well as supporting each other through scouting.
It seems they want to take it one step further, though, and now Girona will be showcasing Manchester City’s trophies from last season for their fans as well.
It’s all a little bizarre and certainly uncommon, and it will be interesting to see if the process is repeated at the Etihad if Girona were to win La Liga this season.
