Joining Liverpool would fit into Xabi Alonso’s ‘ideology’, with the doors to Anfield currently ‘wide open’ for the former midfielder.
That’s according to AS, who provide the Spanish slant on Alonso today as a battle between Liverpool and Bayern Munich for his signature appears to be on the cards.
Both clubs are on the hunt for new managers next season, with Jurgen Klopp and Thomas Tuchel set to depart in the summer.
Alonso is the man they both seem to want, having established himself as one of the rising coaches in Europe since taking charge of Bayer Leverkusen last year.
Since then, he’s led them to Europe and this season has them sitting eight points clear at the top of the Bundesliga.
Their rise under Alonso, playing an attractive brand of attacking football, has only further enhanced Alonso’s reputation and made him the most desirable coach in Europe at this point.
Liverpool and Bayern both want him back at their clubs after he played for both during his playing career and AS cover that today.
They say that Alonso has ‘great affection’ for the Premier League team and his ‘ideology’ is to manage in the Premier League and Klopp’s imminent departure means the ‘opportunity is perfect’ at this moment in time.
It remains to be seen how easy it will be to get him from Leverkusen as it’s still not been clarified if he has a release clause in his deal despite reports to the contrary.
Alonso’s close relationship with the Leverkusen hierarchy should facilitate a move if he wants it and an offer that could ‘seduce all parties’ is put on the table but that is yet to happen.
Munich and Liverpool are keen, though, and are ‘two doors open wide’ ready to invite him if he indicates he is open to the switch.
