It appears that if Manchester United were to take an interest in Albert Gudmundsson, they could have an advantage over the likes of Tottenham, who have long been linked with the Iceland international.

That’s because the 26-year-old grew up looking up to David Beckham, mostly because he didn’t have a choice.

The forward, who has 11 goals in all competitions this season, spoke to DAZN, relayed by Gonfia La Rete, about various topics, including the end of the transfer window, when Fiorentina made a big bid for him that was refused by Genoa.

Prior to January, and after, Gudmundsson had been linked to Tottenham a number of times, with Spurs said to be one of the best placed to get him once the season ends.

Still, the player was a fan of Manchester United growing up because his father, also a footballer, was a fanatic of the Red Devils.

He said about his idols: “When I was a kid, it was David Beckham, because my dad, a big Manchester United fan, always made me watch the matches. As I grew up, I started to follow Barcelona more and more. Messi’s Barcelona, and I think they were one of the best ever.”

His father is Gudmundur Benediktsson, who spent the vast majority of his career in Iceland, playing for teams such as Thór, KR Reykjavík and Value, as well as two spells in Belgium with Germinal Ekeren and KFCV Geel.

By contract, his son made an early move to Europe when Heerenveen picked him up from KR in 2013, before he made his way through the ranks at PSV and then AZ Alkmaar, leading to his 2022 move to Genoa.

Since then, he has caught the eye of Tottenham and a few other Premier League clubs, although he has yet to be linked with Manchester United.
