Having lost Nick Pope to a shoulder injury in early December, Newcastle United have been relying on Martin Dubravka and will continue to do so until the end of the season.
The idea that the Magpies could sign a goalkeeper in January did float around, but nothing came of it, but that doesn’t mean they didn’t look at anyone.
Tuttosport, relayed by Milan News, have an article on Michele Di Gregorio, currently doing a good job at Monza, where it’s recalled that the 26-year-old was ‘followed’ by Newcastle last month.
However, Monza made it clear their ‘intention was not to sell him’ and would wait until the summer to consider any bids for him.
It’s added ‘there will be offers’ for them to look at, with his transfer value said to be around €20m by Tuttosport.
Newcastle, who will have a bit more money to play around with once the season ends, could come back, but they would face competition from AC Milan, who could turn to Di Gregorio if they cannot find an agreement with Mike Maignan for a new contract.
The Frenchman has rejected their latest offer of €5m/year, wanting €8m/year, and if he continues to do so, he would then enter the final 24 months of his current deal, with the likes of Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain ready to pounce.
Therefore, if Newcastle still want Di Gregorio in the summer, they will have to arrive early on the scene.
