The Portuguese media today brings a very interesting update on Chelsea’s chase for Sporting star Viktor Gyokeres.
It’s well known that with the great season the striker has been having at Sporting, several clubs are expected to try his signing at the end of the season.
According to Leonino, though, only one side is willing to do some ‘madness’ for Gyokeres, and that’s Chelsea.
The outlet interviewed an agent who’s quoted describing the whole race for the centre-forward, who’s protected by a €100m release clause.
“There are still other clubs interested in signing Gyokeres. Sporting’s negotiating position in this market hasn’t allowed for much talk. In the summer market, the conversation should be different.”
Sporting only spent €20m to sign Gyokeres from Coventry City last summer, and undoubtedly hit the jackpot there.
Since the start of the season, he has 24 goals and ten assists in 27 appearances. That’s why it’s absolutely no surprise the Lions will demand the €100m price tag to let him go.
Chelsea had already been named as the main contender for his signing, but with even the player claiming he wouldn’t leave Sporting in the middle of the season, a January move always sounded unlikely. Now we’ll see if an attempt will take place in the summer.
