Besiktas have opened negotiations to sign Jamaal Lascelles from Newcastle United, according to claims from Turkey.

Newspaper Sabah today writes that the Istanbul side look to land the 30-year-old for a ‘small amount’ by the end of the winter window.

The problem is that Newcastle want to keep Lascelles in their squad, and according to the story, they and the player are still to respond ‘positively’ to Besiktas’ attempt.

The player is said to be considering his future, though, with the outlet claiming he wants a long-term contract.

Lascelles’ commitment to Newcastle expires at the end of the season, so that’s what gives hope of landing him on a bargain deal.

The Magpies may choose to hold him because he’s had 22 appearances for them this season, having a starting place in the team between September and December, and may continue to play an important part in Eddie Howe’s side until the summer.

So Besiktas should probably come up with an interesting bid in the coming days, or they would probably have to wait until the summer to try a free signing.
