Real Madrid would welcome the signing of Raphael Varane from Manchester United in January, should the Spanish side move for him.
The claim initially seemed a wild one, but that may not be the case.
That’s according to AS, who say Real Madrid have activated the search for a centre-back after losing Eder Militao and David Alaba to long-term injuries.
The newspaper explains that the Spanish giants are in no rush to find a replacement at this moment in time, but it is an area that is being explored, with the current focus on an experienced centre-back who can serve as a temporary solution.
One of the names that has ‘emerged first’ is that of Varane, who is currently out of the picture at Manchester United and could be an option.
He’s not officially been put on the table in the offices at Valdebebas as yet but, AS have learned that ‘he would be welcomed’ by the coaching staff as they know him well.
Ancelotti knows the player well after he made 69 appearances under him previously, including the Champions League final in Lisbon.
The Italian manager would therefore welcome him being signed, even if there are concerns about his fragility and confusion regarding his contract situation at Manchester United.
He particularly values the fact that Varane would not need any time to adapt to the club, with Real Madrid see any operation as a good one given, they sold him for €40m when he was fully amortised but could now be secured for a much lower price, perhaps even on a free.
Thus, the Frenchman is very much a player to be considered, even if he hasn’t been put on the table officially as yet.
