West Ham United and ‘two other English clubs’ are eyeing a move for Chelsea defender Ian Maatsen, as the Blues eye up a potential sale in January.

That’s according to journalist Rudy Galetti, who has thrown West Ham into the mix for the defender as part of a conversation with Area Napoli.

Maatsen returned to Chelsea in the summer following a successful loan spell at Burnley, where he had been a key player under Vincent Kompany in the Championship last season.

All expectations had been that he would make a permanent move to Turf Moor but that did not end up making the switch as a deal couldn’t be agreed.

He instead returned to Chelsea but has barely featured for them this season, with all indications that he is not a part of their or Mauricio Pochettino’s plans moving forwards.

That has led to speculation he could be moved on in January, particularly with Chelsea needing to sell players to further reduce the squad numbers and help to balance the books.

They could be aided in that aim by West Ham, with Galetti insisting that they and two other English clubs are keen on the Dutch full-back.

“Chelsea is working to lighten the squad in view of the January transfer window due to Financial Fair Play. Among the names is also out Ian Maatsen,” he said.

“West Ham and two other English clubs are strong on the Dutch full-back. But also pay attention to Napoli who have asked for information on the feasibility of the operation.

“The player’s price is around €15-20m. At the moment there are no contacts advanced but Maatsen is also liked for his young age. A profile that the Italian scouts like.”
